The New Cultural Revolution - Retirement

Canadian Boomers Not Prepared Emotionally to Exit the Workforce

Kelowna, BC, May 1, 2006 -- In Canada, the vanguard of the baby boom generation will be retiring this year as the oldest of the group turn 60. Will boomers, the symbol of social and cultural revolution, be ready for a social and cultural revolution of their own? Nigel Brown, a retirement life planning specialist, doesn't think so.

"You can walk into any bookstore and see row upon row of financial books on retirement planning but very few, if any, on the life issues." says Brown. "The media tends to focus on the financial impact, but a whole generation of people will soon be embarking on a complete lifestyle change. The retirement model has got to change to include a life planning aspect."

In 2006, near-retirees --individuals between the ages of 45 and 64 years old-- comprise almost 40 percent of the Canadian workforce. Over the next five to 10 years, more and more Canadians will be waving goodbye to the office for the last time. For many, it won't be an easy transition. Boredom and loneliness as well as a lack of purpose and meaning are just some of the challenges new retirees will face everyday.

Brown states, "With 8.7 million Canadians on the cusp of retirement, planning for ‘What’s Next,’ needs to be prioritized and addressed more seriously.” Canadian boomers are entering a new phase of their lives, one divorced from their career identity. It's the start of a retirement revolution, so this is an issue that must be addressed now."

Brown's company, Life Planning Matters, helps near-retirees develop post-career identities, allowing individuals across Canada and the United States to face retirement on their own terms.
